Study at a world-class university. Live with a welcoming Spanish family. Explore breathtaking cities and historic sites. Grow in every way.
At Spain Abroad León, you’ll do more than just study—you’ll live the Spanish experience with the support and care of our dedicated team every step of the way.
Your classes take place at the Centro de Idiomas at the Universidad de León, where you’ll learn Spanish in a dynamic and immersive environment. The program is 20 hrs of classes per week (roughly 9:30-2 with a 30 min break) in which you’ll be joined by classmates from around the world! The classes are interactive — not just taking notes. You’ll play games, explore topics such as culture, history, arts, etc. The campus is a unique blend of historic charm and modern facilities, right in the heart of one of Spain’s most fascinating cities.
Stay with a carefully selected local family and experience Spanish culture firsthand. Our homestay partners have hosted hundreds of international students and provide more than just a room—they offer connection, comfort, and authentic daily life.
You’ll share meals, conversation, and laughs—turning a house into a home away from home.
León is a city that lives and breathes history. Once a Roman military outpost and later the capital of the Kingdom of León, it’s where the first European parliament was formed in 1188. Today, it’s a vibrant university town with just the right mix of history, culture, and charm.
Plus, our program includes amazing excursions that take you beyond the city to explore the natural beauty, art, and traditions of northern Spain.
From pre-departure calls to local orientation and daily check-ins, the Spain Abroad team is with you every step of the way. Whether you need help adjusting, finding your way around, or just want someone to talk to—we’ve got your back.
Spain Abroad León isn’t just a study abroad program. It’s a launchpad for independence, self-discovery, and unforgettable memories.
Let’s make this semester the one you’ll never forget.
Because you deserve more than just a study abroad program—you deserve a team that truly cares.
At Spain Abroad, you’re not just another name on a roster. You’re part of a close-knit community where support, connection, and personal growth are at the heart of everything we do.
Extra Support - Just for You!
We’re intentionally small so we can focus on what really matters: you. That means fast replies, flexible solutions, and support that actually feels personal. You’ll never feel lost in the crowd—because there is no crowd. Just a tight group of curious, courageous students writing their own stories abroad.
With the help of our local team, you’ll quickly become part of the León community. Whether it’s chatting with your host family over dinner, volunteering with a local organization, or sharing tapas with new friends, you’ll experience Spanish culture from the inside out—not from behind a tour bus window.
Study at the highly respected Universidad de León, a program approved by the University of Washington, and gain global skills with real academic credibility. You’ll benefit from the strength of a university partnership—without sacrificing the warmth and intimacy of a boutique program.
Your wellbeing matters—inside and outside the classroom. That’s why we weave wellness into your experience with resources and guidance that support your mind, body, and heart. Need help finding a local yoga studio, a quiet café to study, or a vegan-friendly spot for lunch? We’ll point you in the right direction.
At Spain Abroad, we don’t just help you study in Spain. We help you thrive.
Come for the academics. Stay for the growth, the friendships, the memories—and the support that makes it all possible.
Level up your Spanish, your confidence, and your connection to the culture.
Before you even unpack your bags, you’ll complete a placement assessment to make sure you’re in the class that fits your skill level and helps you grow. From grammar foundations to exploring great works of Spanish literature, there’s something here for everyone—from total beginners to fluent speakers ready to dive deep.

Your Spanish adventure isn’t just a trip—it’s a turning point.
Let’s make it unforgettable.
Because history isn’t just something you read about—it’s something you walk through.
León, Spain, is a city with over 2,000 years of stories to tell. From Roman legions to royal parliaments, medieval monarchs to modern culture, this northern Spanish gem offers a one-of-a-kind backdrop for your study abroad adventure. Here’s just a glimpse of what makes León unforgettable:
Roman Roots
Founded in 29 BC as a Roman military camp, León still holds the echoes of empire. Walk alongside the original Roman walls that once protected the legendary Legio VII Gemina.
A Medieval Capital
In the 10th and 11th centuries, León served as the capital of the powerful Kingdom of León, playing a key role in the Reconquista. Eventually uniting with Castile, it helped shape the foundation of modern Spain.
Birthplace of European Parliament
In 1188, León made history by hosting the first recognized parliament in Europe—the Cortes de León. It was the first time commoners had a voice in governance. UNESCO now recognizes León as the “Cradle of Parliamentarism.”
The Camino de Santiago
León is a beloved stop along the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. For centuries, it has welcomed pilgrims from around the world—and it still does.
The León Cathedral
Step into a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. With over 1,800 square meters of stained glass, León’s cathedral is one of the most stunning in Spain—built atop ancient Roman baths you can still visit today.
San Isidoro Basilica
Known as the “Sistine Chapel of Romanesque Art”, this 12th-century treasure features Europe’s best-preserved Romanesque frescoes and the Royal Pantheon, where medieval kings of León rest.
Shaping a Nation
León played a pivotal role in the unification of Spain. As a center of law, language, and military power, it helped write the early chapters of the Spanish story.
Napoleon & Rebellion
During the Peninsular War, León was occupied by Napoleon’s army. The city later rose in Spain’s fight for independence, becoming a symbol of resistance.
A City That Grew With Grace
While modernization swept across Spain in the 20th century, León kept its charm. Today, it’s a vibrant city that blends ancient roots with modern culture, perfect for studying history, art, politics, and life.
Tapas, Anyone?
And yes—you still get free tapas with every drink. It’s one of the last cities in Spain to keep this beloved tradition alive. Order a soda or a vino, and a delicious bite comes with it—on the house.
León isn’t just a place you visit. It’s a place that stays with you.
Ready to walk through history? Let’s go.
No. Prior to arrival, you will take an online assessment of your Spanish knowledge which will help us enroll you in the proper level for class. This could mean being conversationally fluent in Spanish to never speaking a word of Spanish before. We have the options and flexibility to meet you where you are and support you as you become more comfortable using the Spanish language.
The minimum drinking age in Spain is 18. If you are of legal age, responsible drinking is allowed outside of your home. No alcohol is allowed in the home of your host family. The European relationship with alcohol tends to be much different than Americans, where one or two glasses of wine or beer while eating tapas with friends is appropriate. Drinking deemed excessive will be a topic of conversation with your coach as we encourage you to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Becoming drunk or belligerent is not tolerated at Spain Abroad.
Yes, you are allowed to bring your cellphones and laptops to Spain Abroad. You will need your laptops for classes (yes, the house has wifi), and you will need your cellphones for communication with staff and students in the program, but also for communication with friends and family back home. Be mindful of the difference in time zones! We also encourage you to take pictures and post on social media. This is an incredible experience. We fully expect that you want to share information and pictures with those that you care about.
Travel insurance is not a part of the Spain Abroad tuition.
We do work with an insurance broker that provides insurance for all the students in the program. It is wonderful insurance that is accepted by our local hospital.
Dating is acceptable if and when it doesn’t interfere with group activities and responsibilities of the program. Students are still expected to be back at agreed upon curfews and to stay with the group on Saturday evenings. Dating should not interfere with a student’s ability to participate in any and all activities.
While our students are in the program, we ask families to refrain from visiting, but we do encourage them to visit when the program ends, allowing the student to show them around Estepona, introduce them to the staff, and give them a glimpse into what their life has been like over the past few months.
No. Even though Marijuana is considered “legal” in Spain, you must be a citizen of Spain to purchase it, therefore, any attempt to purchase or use marijuana will be illegal. At Spain Abroad we have a zero tolerance, no drug policy.
At Spain Abroad, we encourage students to communicate with their families. The easiest way to communicate while in Spain is through WhatsApp, so we ask students and families to download the app prior to arrival. We are an academic focused program with similar communication expectations as any college or university. Parent coaches can be available upon request.
