Spain Abroad is a family-owned study abroad / GAP year program for 16 – 23 year olds offering a life-coaching mentorship program and cultural immersion language programs.
At Spain Abroad, we recognize the critical importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with technology. Co-owners/founders Johnny Tock, Leanna Woodley-Tock, and Lillian Ortiz-Self have dedicated their careers to addressing the challenges posed by excessive screen time, particularly for children and adolescents.
With Johnny’s experience as a director at the first internet and video game addiction therapeutic program in the United States, Johnny saw the staggering results of tech addiction firsthand. With Lillian’s work experience as a school counselor and mental health counselor, she experienced the impact of tech overuse on the child’s social and emotional wellbeing, with children 5-18. Soon after, Johnny and Leanna launched their non-profit, Youth Unplugged, and with Lillian’s participation, together they ran outdoor camps for young children, committed to teaching the next generation the value of tech balance.

IN SPAIN, recent studies indicate that while 57.9% of teens spend less than two hours on their phones daily, the average American teen logs a staggering NINE HOURS. This stark contrast highlights the necessity of fostering a balanced lifestyle that prioritizes community engagement and outdoor activities.
A component of our Finding Mañana life balance wellness curriculum focuses on practical strategies to shift technology from being the lead character of your day to a supporting role. Taking it even further in our GAP program, our goal is to help students create a fulfilling lifestyle that isn’t driven by tech use but rather integrates it as a smaller accessory to daily activities. Through weekly tech-balance life groups, students learn the physiological and emotional effects of tech overuse, explore healthier tech habits and tools, and how to foster a mindful relationship with their devices.
At Spain Abroad, we believe in empowering our participants to find this balance. Our program is designed to encourage real-world interactions, connection with nature, and personal growth—ensuring that technology serves as a tool, not a crutch.
Join us in fostering a lifestyle that embraces both technology and the enriching experiences of the outdoors. Together, we can help you create a more balanced life with a healthier relationship with tech.
